What Is the Maliau Basin?
The Maliau Basin Conservation Area covers nearly 588 square kilometres of pristine rainforest in the heart of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Often called Sabah’s Lost World due to its seclusion and ecological richness, the basin is a massive saucer-shaped rainforest catchment fed by its own river system and rimmed by steep jungle-clad escarpments.
Unlike many other Borneo attractions, the Maliau Basin feels truly wild — you won’t find paved roads, resorts or crowds here. Instead, you’ll cross ancient dipterocarp forests, observe rare wildlife, and engage with nature on its own terms.
