Protecting and sustaining the Conservation Area demands the participation of all stakeholders, including government, institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the communities that live in the conservation area’s vicinity.

Known as Sabah’s Lost World, Maliau Basin is a pristine rainforest that shelters rare and endemic species and shows how conservation and community can coexist. Protection here goes beyond biodiversity. It means working with Indigenous communities, applying science-led stewardship, and managing tourism responsibly to keep the ecosystem wild and resilient for future generations.

From implementing low-impact tourism guidelines and renewable energy systems to supporting local livelihoods and reducing waste, every action we take is designed to preserve the integrity of this remarkable ecosystem for our future generation.

Although Maliau Basin lies deep within a remote and pristine corner of Borneo – with the nearest community located over 80 kilometers away, its conservation journey is closely connected to the people of Sabah.  Our commitment to community engagement is rooted in creating meaningful economic and cultural links that support both local livelihoods and nature protection.  One of the most direct ways we foster this connection is through the involvement of local porters and guides through Porters & Guides Association.  These individuals play a vital role in enabling visitors to experience the wonders of the “Lost World” safely and sustainably.  By providing training and employment in nature recreation and nature interpretation, we help ensure that the benefits of conservation extend beyond the forest edge and into rural communities.  This approach not only enriches the visitor experience with authentic cultural insights but also builds a sense of shared ownership and responsibility for protecting one of Malaysia’s most extraordinary natural treasures.
